tldr: it's a program you can run in the background, or even just when your pc, smartphone, console or tablet is idle, or anytime you want. it's setup by Stanford university and has been going some 12 odd years now. it uses your gadgets processing power to do complex calculations, with tens of thousands of users around the world adding up to some serious compute power.
the research is to help alzheimers and various forms of cancers research.
